White Wines

Textbook Sauvignon.  Green apple and gooseberries on the nose with crisp dry fruit  and smooth acidity on the palate.

Unoaked Chardonnay with buttery/nutty aromas and satisfying tropical fruit flavours with good length.

3.   Trebbiano&Garganega 2008 Ponte Pietra, Veneto, Italy   4.10    5.30    14.95

Crisp, refreshing dry white from Veneto in northern Italy.  Made from Garganega and Trebbiano grapes, it has a zing reminiscent of good Pinot Grigio.

4.   Grillo 2008 Villa Tonino, Marsala, Italy(S)            16.95

Sicily’s finest white grape variety is making a comeback. A rich bouquet of bananas and ripe white fruits with a certain depth and crispness on the palate.  Has a nutty and long-lasting finish. 

5.   Soave Classico 2008 Monteforte, Italy                          17.95   

Stunningly good Soave with a delicate bouquet and fresh zingy acidity. The Classico means it comes from the best vineyard sites situated near the town of Soave.

6.   Pinot Grigio  2008 Alpha Zeta, Verona, Italy(VT)              4.40          6.30           18.50

This wine has a purity of fruit rare in a Pinot Grigio from the Veneto.  It has a scented, spicy character on the nose, good weight and breadth on the palate and good acid on the finish,
which is surprisingly long.

7.   Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Domaine Corbillieres, Loire, France                    21.95

Super minerality and pinpoint fruit make this wine seem more like Sancerre than Touraine Sauvignon Blanc.  Balanced mouth-feel and gentle acidity make this ideal with salads and lighter dishes

Dry, crisp, light and elegant

8.   Liberty Fairtrade Chenin Blanc, Charles Back, S.A.(S)   4.30           5.75           16.95

Charles Back, the owner of Fairview has been working with the Fairtrade movement for a few years now.
Fresh and dry, with a crisp, appley fruit offset by ripe, tropical flavours.    

9.   Verdiccio Tere di Valbona, Cantina Belisario, Italy(O)    4.60           6.50           18.95


Bright, clean lemon yellow in colour, it is fresh and clean on the nose, with an attractive floral,
lemony perfume. On the palate it is zesty, youthful and unoaked, with good length and a mineral quality
on the finish. Verdicchio is becoming quite a sought after variety, so go on, fill yer boots!!

10. Lois Gruner Veltliner 2008, Fred Loimer, Austria(OF,V,B)                                  21.50

Vivacious with youthful, fresh fruit and lime-led acidity. Hints of grapefruit and white pepper are balanced by a clean lemony freshness which lasts through to the finish of this most excellent wine.  

11. Lenz Riesling 2008, Fred Loimer Austria(OF,V,B)                                               22.50               

This straight Riesling from Lenz in Austria displays fresh scents of peaches and gooseberries. On the palate it is vibrant and zippy with bright acidity and lemon and lime citrus flavours. Beautifully balanced with a lingering finish.

12. Yealands Riesling 2008, Awatere, New Zealand(S)                                             22.95

This dry Riesling from the southern most part of Marlborough, the Awetere shows intense lemon, mineral, lime and apple characters with a refreshingly crisp finish.

13. Yealands Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Awatere, New Zealand(S)                              22.95

Intense lifted mineral and fresh herb characters on the nose. The palate is well structured and elegant; intense mineral characters, with layers of blackcurrant, nettle and wet stone with a lingering zesty citrus finish.

14. Malvasia Bianca 2008 Primo, Ortona, Italy                                                       16.95

Clean, dry and fresh with an aniseed twist on the nose, the wines from Ortona are starting to cause quite a  stir in Sourthern Italy with their modern style producing wines that are gently fragrant, crisp and fresh.

15. Chocalan Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Chile                            4.50           6.30          18.50

Fresh and aromatic on the nose, with perfumes of crisp green apples and a twist of lime.  On the palate it is clean and zesty, with a light, fine fruit character, hints of tropical fruit and a dry,fresh finish. This shows the excellent progress Chile has made in their quest for quality white wines. 

16. Pecorino 2008 Gran Sasso, Abruzzi, Italy(V)                                                    21.95

Light and scented, this crisp, fresh style is dry, tangy and slightly salty with good balance and a textured richness on the palate. 

17. Franconia 2007 Wurzburg, Germany                                                                  21.95

Scented and soft yet crisp on the finish, make this wine eminently appealing and drinkable. The blend of Rivaner, Sivaner and Bacchus re-inforce the modern approach to this astonishing wine. 

18. Yealands Pinot Gris 2008, Awatere, New Zealand(S)                                          22.95

Light lemon yellow in colour with a youthful rim.  Concentrated and perfumed on the nose, with pear drop and hints of spiced apple. Mouth-filling, silky texture with layers of plump fruit and butter,
held together with a refreshing acid structure.

19. Albarino 2007/08, Matin Codax, Rias Baixas, Galicia, Spain                            24.00

Albariño is the white grape variety of note from Spain with a style very similar to Viognier. Aromatic and elegant with aromas of fresh herbs, green apples, citric fruits and grapefruit.
On the palate it is persistent, round, full-bodied and fresh.   

20. Rioja Blanco 2007 Vina Izadi, Spain                                                                 24.00

Made from Malvasia and Viura, this delicious, vibrant wine is fermented in new American oak and aged on its lees. The results are quite outstanding; fresh and balanced, yet full of flavour!

21. Semillon 2007 Brokenwood, Hunter Valley, Australia(VT)                             24.95

A delightful Semillon from an area just to the west of Sydney. A must-try wine that offers a sherbert-fresh palate with a mineral zing on the side. A really great food wine as well, owing to the well balanced acidity.

22. Chablis 2006 Corinne Perchaud, Burgundy, France                                          28.00

Top class Chablis, aged in stainless steel to produce a wonderful purity of fruit.  Citrus flavours and a minerally character backed up with racy acidity.

Rose Wines

23. Pinot Grigio Rosato 2008 Ponte Pietra, Veneto, Italy        4.50         6.30           17.95   

A vibrant coral pink colour gives way to a clean and delicately scented nose that has hints of cherries. On the palate, the wine is soft and rounded and highly drinkable. Made from fully ripe Pinot Grigio grapes that are fully ripe and go a rich copper colour on the vine.

24. Charles Melton Rose of Virginia 2008, Barossa, Australia(V)                             26.00

Vivid fuschia in colour, with lovely aromatic Grenache perfumes on the nose, given a touch of spice by the Shiraz and Cabernet. The tiny proportion of Pinot Meunier adds further interest. On the palate the wine is well-balanced, with good mid-palate richness and the surprising weight and trademark tannins of the Rose of Virginia.

Fizz

The ‘frizzante’ IGT Colli Trevigiani, is closed with a crown cap.  It is soft, scented and grapey, with delicious lightness and good length.

From an outstanding Champagne House, this wine shows it’s quality. 100% Pinot Noir gives a rich, yet elegant palate with a gorgeous lemon zingy at the back of the palate

Full-flavoured, subtle, fruity and complex

29. Merlot/Corvina 2008 Ponte Pietra, Veneto, Italy          4.10         5.30       14.95

Jammy, juicy, cherry fruit from Veneto.  Soft, and very easy drinking, this is a good all rounder, made from perennial favourite Merlot and food-friendly Corvina.

30. Cotes du Rhone Paralelle 45 Rouge 2006, France       5.20          7.30          21.50                   

A remarkably elegant Cotes du Rhone with soft and subtle red berry fruit overtones and soft, silky tannins. Made by one of the top Rhone producers, Paul Jaboulet Aine, this estate has gone through major changes recently and now produces wines of the highest quality.

31. Carmenere 2008 Vina Chocolan, Chile                                                        18.50

This spicy, juicy style is full of ripe red berry fruit and a jammy, full finish. Cool breezes from the Andes and the proximity to the Pacific Ocean allow the grapes to develop fully to give  a vibrant, fruity finish.

A jammy, juicy ripe beauty from the Abruzzi region in central-eastern Italy that gives a full,  balanced palate with delicious red berry fruit flavours.

33. Shiraz-Grenache 2006 Hellfire Bay, W.A., Australia(VT)    4.90           6.80    19.95

Just stunning value for money at this price, this is wonderful with slow cooked stews and roasted vegetables. Smooth and soft with bags of rich bramble fruit and a most elegant finish.

Ruby coloured wine with aromas of plums, cherries and blueberries. Well balanced on the palate with fruit and spice characters, soft tannins and a long, elegant finish.

35. Azamor 2005 Alentejo, Portugal(V,S)                19.95        

Good colour, a peppery nose and dark liquorice fruit on the palate. A smooth, approachable  style, backed up by a soft, velvety finish. 

36. Chianti 2007 Cerro del Masso, Tuscany, Italy                                 19.95  

Deep colour, a ripe plumy nose, a full, fleshy palate with supple tannins and great balance. This is long, intense and impressive!

37. Valpolicella 2008 Allegrini, Italy                                            21.95

Allegrini are one of the leading producers in Italy, this is medium bodied red that offers vibrant cherry and plum fruit with good balancing acidity.

Thoroughly modern in style, 100%Tempranillo, partially aged in new American oak. The result is a wine of great personality, with fine tannins, layers of flavour and a long, elegant finish.

Good colour, a peppery nose and deep rich black fruit on the palate. Flatteringly combines creaminess of texture with bright sappy fruit, culminating in a truly palate- staining finish of focused fruit and subtle pepper.

Another great partner to lighter dishes, this Pinot demonstrates what a fine job Western Australia is making at producing top Pinot.  Rich, vibrant fruit with a delicate aroma of summer fruits.

Dense colour, a spicy nose and dark liquorice fruit on the palate. This smooth, soft, approachable style shows the changing face of Argentinian winemaking at its best!

42. Pinotage 2007 Fairview, South Africa(V)                                                               21.50

 Luckily Charles Back knows that a good dollop of Shiraz is just the thing when it comes to tempering Pinotage. Go on, give your tastebuds something to savour!

43. De Loach California Series Zinfandel 2006, USA                                                21.95

Rich flavours of mulberry and blueberry fruit are complemented by hints of clove and vanilla in the long, smooth finish. This rich, hearty wine has great tannin structure, and a velvety mouth-feel.

44. Barbera ‘Tere Caude’ 2003 Ca’ del Matt,  Piemonte, Italy(VT)   22.95

Stunning, rich red that is packed with blackberries and plums; great with spicier dishes, or easy drinking on its own.  Made by a New Zealander in Piedmont, it represents the perfect marriage between Old and New World approaches to winemaking. Winner of a Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge.

45. Barco Reale 2006/07 Carmignano, Italy                                         23.95

Young but approachable, this is a lovely medium-full bodied wine from one of Tuscany’s oldest vineyards - and that’s saying something!  Very fruity and drinkable, but with plenty of complexity beneath the surface attractiveness.  Lovely with Italian-influenced dishes.

46. Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Mitolo Jester, McLaren Vale, Australia  26.95

30% of the fruit is Amarone dried to enrich the middle palate of this quite intense, yet magnificently
elegant Cabernet from McLaren Vale. . 

47. Moulin La Lagune 2001/2 Bordeaux, France(S)                           38.00

One of the most appealing and successful of Bordeaux’s second wines, this offers a more approachable
style, with classic Bordeaux complexity. Blend of 40% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon
and 10% Cabernet Franc from the stable of Chateau La Lagune.

48. Finca Villacreces 2004/5 Ribera del Duero, Spain                      42.00

Best described as part of the grail-actually the golden mile-when it comes to wine! This is concentrated, complex and elegant with fine tannins, good balance and a glorious finish. Just amazing!

49. Cantina di Montalcino 2003 Brunello, Tuscany(VT)                  48.00

Fast becoming one of the most established Brunello producers, this rich and full Sangiovese exhibits dark Chocolate and ripe blackberry flavours balanced by juicy acidity.  This wine was recently voted favourite
Brunello by a panel of Decanter Magazine.

50. Barolo 2004 Franco Massolino, Piemonte, Italy                                  50.00

Franco Massolino has produced a very special wine  with his modern approach to bring a wine displaying classic style and structure, while at the same time endeavouring to show modern purity of fruit. The result is a masterpiece!

51. Chianti Classico Riserva 2004 Fontodi, Vigna del Sorbo, Italy             50.00

The quality of Giovanni Manetti’s grapes is of an unrivalled standard and this is reflected in his wines.  This has lovely spice on the nose, good weight and a long, lingering finish.

52. Amarone della Valpolicella 2005 Alpha Zeta, Veneto, Italy(VT)             50.00    

Superb fusion of concentrated fruit and fine, toasty oak, this unique wine is made from Corvina grapes which have been left out to dry over the winter allowing the sugars to concentrate. The resulting wine is simply stunning! Wonderful with rich red meat or for savouring with the cheese board.




Several of our wines - especially those from New Zealand and Australia – now arrive with screwcaps or ‘Stelvin’ closures.  More and more forward-looking winemakers are choosing
